An image is simply a picture. You can upload images and look at them, just as many other websites do; you can also identify an image as being a picture of a stamp type, a watermark, an object in your collection, a page from an album, etc.

You can upload images from your own computer, or scan a page on the net to find images to upload. Getting an image directly from another page has the advantage that it records the URL, so that you or others can refer back to the original.

Image properties

  • Name - the image's name is the same as its file name. The name must include one of the allowed extensions (.jpg .gif .png)

  • Type - what the image is a picture of; stamp, page, etc.

  • Description - more detail about what the image depicts.

  • Issuer - the issuer most associated with the image. For an image of a stamp, it will be the issuer of the stamp, while for an album page, it could be the predominant issuer of the stamps on the page.

  • Visibility - images may be public, visible to other members only, or private to the owner.

  • Owner - the owner is the StampData member in control of the image. Unowned images may be manipulated by anybody.

    Image identification

For images of stamps and watermarks, StampData has the concept of identification. Identification is always optional.

Identification has two stages. The first is to provide a description and issuer. StampData then finds all the stamps matching the description, and any objects of those types. In the second stage, you check off a specific type (or types) or object.
