What: country The Gilbert Islands are a chain of small islands in the Pacific Ocean. Formerly a part of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands colony, they split off in 1976 when the Ellice Islands became independent as Tuvalu, becoming independent in turn as Kiribati in 1979.
