What: territory The Sanjak of Latakia was a territory on the coast of present-day Syria, including the city of Latakia and surrounding region. Formerly the Alawite State (Alaouites), it was renamed to Latakia in 1930, remaining nominally independent until final incorporation into French Syria in 1936.
