"Everyone has a city, and its name is Jerusalem" wrote poet Natan Yonatan, reflecting the wide range of emotions that this magical city evokes in the hearts of billions of people around the world. For thousands of years this magical city has been at the center of existence for people of different religions and cultures who consider it to be the place where God chose to be revealed and where He will judge mankind at the end of time. Pilgrims of all religions choose to come to Jerusalem to follow their religious sentiments, to see the places they admire and to walk in the footsteps of the saints who have molded the essence of their faith. Thus for example, Christian believers can walk the alleyways of the Old City along the traditional Via Dolorosa and touch the stones they believe to be holy. Throughout history, representatives of many different empires ruled Jerusalem, leaving their mark upon the city by erecting magnificent buildings representing their own culture. The Ramparts Promenade, which runs along the top of the Old City walls and was built in the 16th century by Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, provides tourists with a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the roofs of the Old City interspersed with minarets atop mosques, church towers and domed synagogues. |

A public association called Hai-Bar was founded in the 1960's under the patronage of the Nature Parks Authority and managed by Avraham Yaffe and Uri Tson. The association's objective was to restore wildlife species which had become extinct in Israel and repopulate endangered species. In the early 1970's, an area of approximately 12,000 dunams (2965 acres) was fenced in within the Yotvata Nature Reserve, which preserves one of the salt flats in the Southern Arava. Large herbivores which had become extinct in Israel were brought in, as well as a number of species that did not exist in Israel but were endangered in the world, such as the wild ass, the white antelope, the Sahara oryx, the Arabian oryx , the African wild ass and the ostrich. It is a diverse habitat, rich in species and large acacia trees which grow in the western part of the reserve.
In the beginning of the 21st a few thousand additional dunams were fenced in to the west of highway 90 in order to protect the world's last population of Acacie Gazella which is endangered worldwide. This species is monitored carefully to preserve its existence. |

As it turns 70, the State of Israel looks back with great satisfaction and proudly reviews the many achievements it has made along a frequently bumpy road.
On May 14, 1948, David Ben Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. At that time, the Jewish population had been at war with the Arabs of Eretz Israel for six months and the day after the proclamation the young country was invaded by armed forces from five different Arab countries. After many months of bloody fighting, which ended in a truce agreement, the State of Israel successfully thwarted its enemies. However, it suffered a severe economic crisis and extreme shortages, which required a policy of austerity and the rationing of basic consumer goods.
Despite these difficult initial conditions, the State of Israel did not hesitate to undertake a series of challenging national tasks right from the start. The nation opened its doors to Jewish refugees, Holocaust survivors from Europe and members of Jewish communities who were expelled from Arab countries. Hundreds of new towns were built throughout the country and economic development began in many different fields. |

Bleriot XI the first airplane in Eretz Israel, 1913 French aviator Jules Vedrines landed his Bleriot XI monoplane north of Jaffa, as he competed in an aviation contest promoted by the French newspaper Le Matin. The contest route took aviators from Paris to Cairo. The first stamp in this series marks the flight of the first aircraft in the skies of Eretz Israel. Vedrines took off from Paris in November 1913 and, after an adventuresome journey that included a diplomatic incident with Germany and gunfire over Yugoslavia, he landed in Turkey. From there he flew to Beirut and subsequently took off, on December 27, 1913 for Mikve Yisrael, where the “first international airport of Eretz Israel” had been prepared for him. Due to strong winds which depleted the airplane’s fuel supply, Vedrines landed by the train station near the beach in Tel-Aviv. The next day he flew from there to Mikve Yisrael, as planned, and on December 29th continued on to Cairo. |

Caricatures and comics have been a part of our world for many years, providing an amusing and oftentimes sarcastic look at our lives. Every self-respecting newspaper devotes space to these cheerful doodles, which are frequently thought provoking and even piercing and prickly.
In Israel, the words "comics" and "caricature" are used in Hebrew in their transliterated forms, despite past attempts to establish Hebrew terms to replace them.
As part of the celebrations for Israel's 70 Years of Independence, Michel Kichka illustrated three lighthearted and humoristic stamps depicting how far the State and citizens of Israel have come from 1948 to 2018. The first stamp takes us back to the "days of innocence", a time when the most popular vehicle was the tractor and agriculture was the top priority for Israel's heads of state and the majority of its population. Every tourist and guest was invited to see the Israeli wonder – the kibbutz. The stamp tab rounds out the periodic image: a transistor radio, which was an exciting new technological invention that did not have to be plugged into the electricity, a glass of seltzer and a falafel, the national food. |

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the Zionist Organization, entered into negotiations with British leaders shortly after the start of WWI in an attempt to achieve their recognition of the Jewish people's right to Eretz Israel. In late 1917, following lengthy discussions and after many objections, these efforts came to fruition with the Balfour Declaration, issued by the British government led by Lloyd George. The text of the declaration was sent by Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild on November 2, 1917, with the request that he forward it to the Zionist Federation.

Entertainment and sporting events constituted a significant part of the cultural activity in ancient Rome. The city rulers, who coined the phrase "bread and circuses", distributed free food and built arenas as a way to placate the masses. Roman soldiers and officials brought their customs to every corner of the vast empire and contributed to the dissemination of this culture among local populations. Thus, these arenas became an important part of the urban landscape in Eretz Israel during the Roman Period.
The most common arena was the semi-circular Theater, in which all seats faced the front stage. Every self-respecting city built a theater and overall more than 30 theaters of varying sizes were constructed in Eretz Israel. The theater was adopted from the Greeks who preceded the Roman Period. Dramas, comedies and tragedies were performed in the Greek theaters, but the audiences' tastes changed and in the Roman Period most of the performances were pantomimes and social satire. Rabbi Abbahu, an amora (Jewish Talmudist) and head of a yeshiva who lived in Caesarea in the 4th century described a satire performance in which actors dressed as animals took the stage as part of a show that mocked Jewish customs. The Jerusalem Talmud features a description of the role of an actor in a pantomime who hires the services of female musicians and dancers, applauds them, dances and plays the cymbals before them. |

Fifty years ago, in 1964, the curtain rose on Fiddler on the Roof – the first large-scale Broadway musical based on a Jewish-Yiddish classic. The plot takes place in a Jewish town in Russia and is based on the stories of Tevya the Dairyman written by the greatest Yiddish humorist, Shalom Aleichem. The first of these short stories was published precisely 70 years earlier. The musical was written by Joseph Stein (book), Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) and Jerry Bock (music). The director-choreographer was Jerome Robbins, and in the lead role – Zero Mostel. Since the premiere in New York, Fiddler on the Roof has been performed tens of thousands of times all over the world. The first performance to take place in another country and in another language was in Israel, in Hebrew, in 1965. Yossef "Bomba" Tzur, Shmuel Rodensky and Chaim Topol were the first to portray the character of Tevya in Hebrew. Since then the show has been translated and performed in more than 20 languages, from Yiddish to Japanese, and many millions have seen and continue to see it with great excitement to this day. This year the Hebrew version is being run for a fourth time in Tel-Aviv, with Natan Datner currently playing the lead role. The American musical film that was produced based on the show starring Chaim Topol has been seen by more than one billion (!) viewers and continues to be screened again and again in movie theaters and on television worldwide. Chaim Topol also played Tevya on stage in English in London, the U.S., Japan and Australia. |

Hundreds of different Passover Haggadahs have been designed at kibbutzim, by kibbutz movements, pioneer trainings, youth groups tied to the kibbutz movement, in Hebrew military units that operated in Eretz Israel during WWII, by groups of those uprooted in Europe after the war, by Jews attempting to enter Eretz Israel illegally during the British Mandate, by the Haganah, the Palmach and the IDF. These Haggadahs were geared toward large public Seders, which were very different than an intimate family Seder. These public Seders were more like the mass pilgrimages of ancient times. At the Seder, participants read biblical chapters related to the exodus from Egypt and discussed Moses, who is not mentioned in the traditional Haggadah. When the Holocaust became known, a heart wrenching memorial prayer was added to the Seder. |

In Rabbinic literature, in both the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds and the midrashim, we find many parables—some relating to plant life and others to animal life. These are, in fact, fables: very short stories in which plants or animals speak, feel, and act as humans in every way. The stories have a moral and teach a lesson. The Sages called these stories "fox parables" or "palm parables". Examples of this literary genre already existed in the Bible: the parable of Yotam (Judges 9:7-20), the parable of the Thistle and the Cedar (2 Kings 14:9-10) and the parable of the Vineyard (Isaiah 5:1-7). Fables were well-known in ancient Babylon, and Babylon seems to have been where the Story of Ahikar, a collection of parables, was created. That book was translated into many languages, including Syriac, Arabic, Aramaic and Greek. Fables flourished in Ancient Greece, where Aesop's Fables originated. The first anthology attributed to Aesop was known as early as the 3rd century BCE. The broad contacts between Greek and Israelite cultures in the Hellenistic period brought Aesop’s fables into our literature as well. The three stamps in this series are based on the Parables of the Sages, which are notably similar to some of Aesop's Fables. |

Israel is home to some 750,000 deaf persons, approximately 15,000 of whom use sign language. Sign language is a human, natural visual language expressed through the hands, face and body. It is not a universal language, and every deaf community develops its own unique language. Thanks to the fact that the deaf can communicate through visual language, which does not require the sense of hearing, they do not consider themselves to be disabled or impaired, rather a community with the characteristics of a minority group: a common history, cultural and social activities and a common language – sign language. Sign language is the only language that a deaf child can acquire naturally, with no specific training. The acquisition of a natural language is a necessary element for proper social-emotional and cognitive development. Also, as has been proven in studies, the acquisition of sign language as a natural language very much promotes learning the regular spoken language. King Solomon inherited a large and wealthy kingdom from his father King David, stretching from the Euphrates River in the north to the Eilat Bay in the south. The good trade relations King Solomon created with the rulers of nearby kingdoms as well as the great wealth he accumulated thanks to those relations and to the taxes he collected are described in the Bible in books I Kings and II Chronicles. The development of his fleet in the Red Sea was described in detail: "Hiram sent servants of his with the fleet, mariners who were experienced on the sea, to serve with Solomon's men. They came to Ophir; there they obtained gold in the amount of four hundred and twenty talents" (I Kings, 9:27-28). King Hiram of Tyre, who knew how to build ships and had men who were skilled mariners, partnered with King Solomon, who ruled the Eilat Coast and together they built a fleet of trade ships in the Red Sea. These ships sailed to Ophir, which was apparently located along either the eastern or the western coast of the Red Sea, and returned carrying many treasures and exotic wares. |

Many anthems, poems and songs have been dedicated to Jerusalem over thousands of years. The sanctity and beauty of the city resonate within the souls of believers and travelers alike, and have moved them to pour their hearts out and express their longing in words. The song Jerusalem of Gold has become this generation's link in a long line of works, many of which have become deeply rooted in Israeli culture.
In the winter of 1967, Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek approached the Voice of Israel (Israel's national radio station) and asked them to write a song dedicated to the city, which would be played for the first time as part of a festival scheduled on the upcoming Independence Day. The request was passed to songwriter and composer Naomi Shemer, who sought an idea for the song and eventually found inspiration in ancient Jewish writings. The title and first line of the chorus came from a legend about Rabbi Akiva, who gave his loyal wife a precious piece of jewelry called "Jerusalem of Gold". The phrase "Behold I am a violin for all your songs", which was coined in the Middle Ages by Rabbi Judah Halevi in his well known poem "Zion, will you not ask", provided the inspiration for the rest of the chorus. Shemer used this foundation to create the train of thought of a faithful admirer who is intoxicated by the fragrance and landscapes of Jerusalem, whose heart aches at the city's wretchedness when held captive by the enemy, and who swears to remain faithful forever. |

Shimon Peres – world renowned statesman, Ninth President and Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and a man who embodied action, vision and hope.
Among the founding fathers and pioneers of the State of Israel, Peres dedicated his early years to building Israel's military deterrence and defensive capabilities and for several decades, relentlessly devoted himself to the pursuit of peace before leading Israel on the path toward becoming a global superpower in the fields of technology and innovation.
An intellectual and man of profound knowledge and wisdom, he composed numerous poems, articles and books.
In a career spanning more than sixty years, Peres loyally served the State of Israel. He held several key senior positions including President of the State of Israel, Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Foreign Minister, Minister of the Treasury, Interior Minister, Minister of Absorption, Minister of Transportation and Communications, Minister of Information, Minister of Regional Cooperation and Development of the Negev and Galilee, and Chairman of the Opposition.
Shimon Peres was born Szymon Perski on August 2, 1923 in the town of Wiszniew in Belarus and made Aliyah (immigration to Israel) to Eretz Israel in 1934. He attended the Balfour and Geula schools in Tel Aviv and later the Ben Shemen Agricultural School. In 1941, Peres was sent to undergo agricultural training at Kibbutz Geva with the Ben Shemen group. Together with them, he joined Kibbutz Alumot in the Lower Galilee and during his early days, worked as a shepherd and a dairy farmer. |

srael is home to many different reptile species thanks to its location at the meeting point of three different continents and the wealth of habitats it provides. Some 100 reptile species make their homes here, among them approximately 40 species of snakes, nine of which are venomous.
Snakes are an important component in ecological systems and in the food chain of predators and prey. They feed on arthropods, fish, fowl, small mammals and other reptiles, including snakes, each species according to its size and abilities. Snakes are preyed upon by birds, hedgehogs, mongooses and other animals.
Snakes also face other dangers – dwindling numbers of habitats, accidents with vehicles on the roads and agricultural equipment in the fields, as well as intentional harm by humans.
All the snakes and other reptile species in Israel are protected by law and it is illegal to harm them. It is imperative that they are kept safe, as part of ensuring healthy ecological systems. |
