Dedicated to the year of the dog, which starts on 16 February. There are twelve animal characters in Chinese astrology and the dog is the eleventh among them. According to one legend, this tradition of calling years after animals dates back to the time of Buddha, who named the years by the names of the twelve animals who came to say goodbye to him. In Chinese culture, the dog symbolises courage, loyalty and honesty. 2 2035694 2035695

The DEFENCE LEAGUE is a voluntary national defence institution which is militarily organised, conducts military exercises, bears arms and performs the duties that arise from and have been placed upon it on the basis of the Estonian Defence League Act. Created on 11 November 1918, the DEFENCE LEAGUE is the oldest and largest national defence institution in Estonia. The Defence League has no party affiliation. The activity of political parties and other political movements and the representatives thereof is forbidden within the Defence League. THE FUNCTION OF THE DEFENCE LEAGUE is to increase the readiness of the nation through the free will and own initiative of the people to protect the independence and constitutional order of Estonia. From military defence, upholding internal security to psychological defence, patriotic education and promotion of physical training, the duties of the Defence League cover a large spectrum of national defence. This makes the Defence League important for the functioning of a broad-based national defence and deterrence. The DEFENCE LEAGUE has over 16 000 members. Together with the Women’s Voluntary Defence Organisation, Young Eagles and Home Daughters, there are 25 000 volunteers in the family of the Defence League. 2 2035692 2035693
The design of the Castle of Keila - Joa was made by the Saint Peterburg architect Hans Stackenschneider who later became a court architect and the most important representative of the historical style in Russia. The castle was built next to the Keila river on the right bank and it was one of the first neo-Gothic style buildings in Estonia. The flat roof two storey building is characterized by lancet arch windows and a tower with a crenelated balustrade in the back corner of the building. The manor house complex has been built in 1833. 1 1977469
The design of the Maarjamäe summer estate that lies on the eastern coast of the Tallinn Bay was made by professor Robert Gödicke of the St Petersburg Art Academy, while the building work was directed by Nikolai Thamm, student of the St Petersburg Art Academy, and the building was probably completed in 1874. The most remarkable part of the historicist main building is its tower that is pseudo-Gothic in form, quadrangular at the base and octagonal at the top. Above the spectacular portal that vivifies the facade has been fastened the arms of Orlov - Davődovs with the motto, Fortitudine et Constantia. 1 1977470
The first Estonian champions were ascertained on February 26, 1917 on the Tallinn Kalev skating rink, the event is regarded to be the beginning of Estonian figure skating. Until the Second World War figure skating was represented by the Estonian Winter Sports Union, which belonged to the International Figure Skating Union. During the occupation period ISU membership discontinued. After the restoration of Estonian independence ISU membership was resumed on January 23, 1991 on the basis of Estonian Skating Union application. As a result we could once again take part in international competitions as an independent country. Starting from 1992 Estonian figure skaters have taken part in all Olympic Games and most ISU title competitions. Estonian Figure Skating Union has received high recognition from ISU – the right to organize European Figure Skating Championships in 2010 and Junior World Figure Skating Championships in 2015 was given to Estonia. 2 1977467 1977475
The five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation is celebrated all over the world. The Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) has officially given the title of reformation city both to Tallinn and Tartu. In 1517 the monk and theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546) initiated a debate against the sale of indulgencies. As a result of the discussion that arose in its consequence the wish arose to turn back to the sources of Christianity, underlining a person's personal relationship with God. 1 1977472
